IMHO DSG still have a long way to go b4 it can really replace the conventional torque converter autobox. For one thing, cost is still a big issue.

DSG box costs way more than any conventional auto and it will hurt the profits of any car manufacturer if they offer such gearbox en masse. And then there's the overall reliabilty.....I've yet to see any DSG applications in extreme duty applications eg buses and trucks. I mean, I want to see how DSG boxes can handle the daily abuses in our SBS buses... Laughing

And then there's the ease of maint for DSG boxes. For convetional auto, no matter how high tech or fancy the gearbox ECU is, the basic mech invloved is still similar to the 1st autoboxes from the late 1930s. And that many workshops are able to svc them. The same cannot be said about DSG boxes lor.

And I'd still like to see the day when DSG can compete with conventional autobox in terms of absolute shift comfort and smoothness... Smile

it already does. the shifts are seamless and there is no shift shock whatsoever even until WOT.

Yes and No. All depends on the sensitivity of the person driving the car.

But I do notice that the DSG shifting is more rough than the torque converter GB. The DSG does produce a sexy growl during WOT gear changing!!

There are a lot of rantings about the DSG gearboxes in VAGSG. VW has managed to reduce the cost of the DSG GB that they even offer it in their cheapest Polo. Cost it not an issue. But VW may want to roll it out en masse to iron out the kinks in the design quickly to be competitive.

But reliability is still an issue. Give it time and they will perfect it.

There are still merits to auto-gearboxes compared to DSG. When the auto-gearbox fail, you still have limb mode to drag your vehicle to safety. But for DSG, when it fails, it disengages.

However, DSG is more efficient compared to Auto GB. I've come to realise that my auto gearbox sucks up to 40hp from my engine!!

Yes I do agree conventional autoboxes are not very fuel efficent no matter how many gears it offers. Most of the power loss occurs at the torque converter itself unfortunately. A typical autobox loses about 15% fuel economy as compared to a stick shift counterpart.

Then the Japs gearbox manufacturers came blazing claiming that CVT is THE way to go for the future. Rolling Eyes Sad Well the CVT box itself broke down so often and its a wimp to use that the Jap manufacturers decided not to offer such boxes to most export markets.

For DSG, I guess it can only be considered a TRUE successor to conventional auto and manual trans when such gearboxes can be found in heavy vehicles eg buses and trucks and big 2.5 tons SUVs Very Happy I mean, its really no fun to struggle with double clutching while trying to shift that 12 speed manual in that semi trailer Sad A DSG would be great but it must be able to handle heavy towing loads

I've been looking at the car market with a bit of trepidation. I don't now how long my hybrid battery will last... but car prices are already so much higher than when I got the hybrid that it seems I'd have to pay a lot more to even just keep the same class of car (Civic size and features)...

And COEs keep climbing and predicted to go 3x as high as now... wah low that's like when I bought my Clio. Think the COE was $40K.

VWs look so attractive in terms of luxury, low tax, power, FC... etc... but also worried abt reliability. Will a TSI engine really be reliable for 5-6 years? Will the DSG? Why do VWs fair so badly in consumer reliability surveys in the UK? With car prices headed up, I don't want to commit to a car that I cannot afford to change for years and have to live with poor reliability. Really looking forward to a Polo Turbo 1.2 or a Polo GTI TSI 1.4.... looks like a really good package.

I may be wrong but I heard that the VW Polo 1.2 Turbo will be assembled in Indonesia….

Currently, the single or twin charged 1.2 or 1.4L petrol engines have very good FC. However….

I would love to see our Garmen lowering taxes and allowing Diesel passenger vehicles at reasonable prices!!

The emission and refinement for diesel engines have matched or even surpassed Petrol engines! Turbo diesel vehicles are more suitable for Singapore heavy start-stop traffic conditions. Our new taxis are enjoying rides of their lives!

Couple any engine with an efficient DSG that is reliable…. we are close to a more perfect car already. But we are only prolonging the inevitable… the drying oil wells.

Ultimately, I hope to see really green cars like Hydrogen or Electric. I guess we have to wait until our world is sucked dry of fossil fuels before we can see more truly green vehicles!

Torque converter uses fluid dynamics to transfer power from engine to gearbox to drive train. Therefore while shifting gears, the oil actually "absorb" the shock and thus conventional auto gb has the best shifting comfort. Modern torque converter has lock up clutch and therefore minimising the loss in power due to torque converter... some even can lock in 1st gear...

DSG has 2 sets of clutches, all clutch need to slowly "bite" in to grip, so when changing gears (or clutches to be correct as you will not feel the gear change in DSG ), you will always feel the jerk, except it is much lesser as compared to sequential gearboxes. DSG is next to auto gearbox in shifting comfort but beats normal auto in FC because of the absence of torque converter. And maintenance may be a cost issue...not many knows.. everyone is coming up is with a DSG gearbox but only VW makes their own gearbox for their family. Else should be from Getrac which supplies to all other brands except VW.

CVT has come a long way... depends who makes the gearboxes. I believe the new CVT gearboxes are much reliable now than before..
